August New & Events in the Junction Area

We are looking for a new newsletter editor! The monthly JRA Newsletter needs a new volunteer editor to compile news and event listings and send out the newsletter. If you want to help spread the word about news and events in the Junction community and have a few hours to spare each month, please let us know. We’re hoping to find someone for our September edition. If this is you, please email newsletter@junctionra.ca and we’ll be in touch.

Green 13 is still seeking volunteers to help water Junction area street trees. There are still about 50 trees in the Junction that need to be “adopted”. The community lost 25% of its trees after last year’s drought. Our trees need all the help they can get. Click here for more information.

Swansea Historical Society Arts in the Parks

In honour of Canada’s 150th birthday, a selection of distinguished local writers will read excerpts from their work in Toronto’s historic High Park. All are welcome! The guest of honour, Canada’s Parliamentary Poet Laureate George Elliott Clarke, will kick off the free event. Authors who are scheduled to read include: George Elliott Clarke, Melanie Mah, Neil Ross, Danila Botha Vernon, Michelle Alfano, Andrew Borkowski, David DePoe, Angie Littlefield, Will O’Hara, Bruce Meyer, Kevin Hardcastle, and the Event Coordinator, Bianca Lakoseljac. Let’s Talk Tuesdays: Tuesdays at 3446 Dundas Street West, from 10:00 am – 12:30 pm. Practice your English and make new friends. If you are interested in learning English and can’t attend other English classes, this program is for you! Childminding available. For more information contact Martha at 416-604-0640 ext. 6441.

Junction Seniors Group: Tuesdays from 10:00 – 11:00 am and Fridays from 2:00 – 3:00 pm, Hannah’s Cafe and Bakery, 1822 Bloor Street W. Due to an unforeseen family situation, Pascal’s will be closed until August 24th. Junction Seniors Group will meet at Hannah’s instead.

Community Yoga: Last Tuesday of the month at Annette Library, from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm. One hour community yoga class with Mary on the last Tuesday evening of the month for free. This class is designed for all levels beginner and advanced practitioners alike. All you need is a mat, water bottle. Call 416-393-7692 for any questions.

Street Knit: Last Tuesday of the month at Annette Library, from 6:15 – 8:15 pm. Put your needles together and help keep someone without a home warm this year. Walk This Way: Wednesdays in High Park from 10:30 – 11:30 am. Meet at the Black Oak Cafe on West Road. Discover a new way of walking! Nordic Pole Walking is a fun and effective, low impact, full-body workout for people of all ages, fitness levels and mobility levels! Poles are available to borrow upon request.

Chair Yoga: Wednesdays at Runnymede Library from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm. An ideal exercise program for seniors. Chair Yoga addresses the whole body in a single routine with the main areas of development being balance, flexibility and strength.

Market Days at Mongomery’s Inn: Every Wednesday at Montgomery’s Inn, from 2:00 – 6:00 pm. Get fresh-baked bread, cheese, meats, and produce at this weekly farmers market. Museum tours are free during market hours.

High Park Nature Adult Speaker Series: Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 8:00 pm. High Park Nature Centre.

  • Aug 2: Your Pane is Their Pain – Preventing Bird & Window Collisions – Speaker Paloma Plant, Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) will discuss the problem of birds colliding with windows, and solutions to this conservation issue. FLAP’s pioneering work inspires many to advocate for bird-friendly guidelines, programs and policies that protect birds. Learn how you can do your part. This talk will be followed by an Urban Bat Walk!
  • Aug 9: Citizen Science: Using eBird in the Urban Environment – Emily Rondel from Bird Studies Canada will speak about eBird, a online personal birding checklist. Toronto support millions of birds. About 200 bird species breed in Toronto, and two major migratory routes converge here. As a citizen scientist, you can help researchers collect data to help with understanding bird populations, movements and trends. The features of eBird provide an easy and free platform for tracking bird lists.
  • Aug 16: Restoring Urban Biodiversity Beginning in Our Backyards – Speaker Colleen Cirillo from Toronto Botanical Gardens will address building biodiversity at home. Bring the birds, bees and butterflies home! Learn how to create a beautiful, biodiverse garden through careful plant choice, design and maintenance. This talk includes a walk through the savannah gardens in OURSpace, the Nature Centre’s outdoor classroom.
  • Aug 23: Bat Superpowers: Mammals that fly; and that’s just the beginning! Daily Planet co-host Dan Riskin has spent more than 20 years exploring the biomechanics of bats. Dan will describe the biomechanic abilities of bats who are able to fly, flip, fall, avoid obstacles and more. Using images, video, sounds and stories from research, Dan will show us what makes bats seem like supernatural athletes. This talk will be followed by a guided Urban Bat Walk.

Fret Not Ukulele Night: First Thursday of the month at Montgomery’s Inn, 4709 Dundas St. W, from 6:00-9:00 pm. Come and sing, laugh and make music at this monthly ukulele gathering with Doctor of Music instructor Chris Wilson. Beginners welcome! Bring your use or borrow one from the host. Fee may apply.

Evenings at Colborne Lodge: Every Thursday from May 25 to August 31, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm in High Park. In the Park on a Thursday evening? Why not drop in at the Lodge? Discover how the Howard’s fulfilled their ideal of a romantic villa in 1837– building their country retreat from City life. Step through the French doors and enjoy the view as the Howard’s did. Their lifelong love of the park ensured its preservation as a retreat for us all.

Thirsty Thursdays: Last Thursday of the month at Montgomery’s Inn, from 7:00 – 10:00 pm. Held on the last Thursday of every month, this event offers live traditional music, beverages and stew by firelight in the Inn’s restored 1847 barroom.

Junction Farmers Market: Saturdays at the Junction Train Platform (2960 Dundas Street W) from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. The Junction Farmers Market provides local, sustainably produced fresh foods in ways that build community, support local food growers and producers, and promote access to healthy food for all. Saturdays until November 4.

Knitting Circle: Saturdays at Annette Library from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. Bring your own needles and yarn. All levels are welcome. Limited instruction may be available for beginners from our friendly residents. Drop in. No registrations required.

High Park Walks: First and third Sunday from 10:30 am-12 noon. Meet at the benches, across the road from the south side of Grenadier Restaurant in the middle of High Park. All ages welcome. Dogs on leash only, please.

  • Aug 6: Caterpillars, Moths and Butterflies. Popular science teacher and writer Don Scallen shares his knowledge of these beautiful creatures. Very hands-on and interactive. A favourite with children.
  • Aug 20: Native Plants and FlowersLocal naturalist and photographer Karen Yukich tours natural restoration sites, explaining the work being done to return the park’s plant life to its original beauty.

Stories in the Park: Tuesdays near Runnymede Library from 10:30 – 11:00 am. Join us for summer stories on the grass behind the library. This event is BYOB, Bring Your Own Blanket. In the event of rain, we will gather in the program room. Ages 0-5. No registration required.

Family Bat Walks: Tues, Aug. 8 and Friday Aug 18 from 8:15 – 9:15 pm, Thurs Aug 31 from 8:00 – 9:00 pm. Family Bat Walk Bat hunting at night? Join us for another opportunity to study High Park’s amazing and mysterious bat populations. Use hand-held bat detectors to listen for bats’ ultrasonic calls. Explore their habitat, behaviour, and favourite foods as they swoop and loop during their evening, mid-air forage. We may even practice being bats ourselves! With your help, we can uncover the secrets of their elusive lives.

Family Nature Walks: Dates have changed (see below). All walks meet at the High Park Nature Centre at 375 Colborne Lodge Drive unless special instructions are given.

  • Tues. Aug, 1 | 1:30 – 3:00 pm | Wonderful Wildflowers – Stop and smell the wild roses! This walk is about the many beautiful wildflowers of High Park, especially the flowers that grow in the endangered Black Oak Savannah. Learn the variety of ways wildflowers attract pollinators and spread their seeds. You will have the opportunity to become park stewards and help us restore the savannah.
  • Tues. Aug 15 | 1:30 – 3:00 pm | All You Need is Bugs – Butterflies, grasshoppers and worms, oh my! High Park is a haven for creepy crawlies and fantastic fliers. Explore the amazing world of bugs and learn facts such as what makes an insect different from a bug. Discover reasons why bugs are so incredible, their importance to the ecosystem, and have a chance to see some up close and personal.
  • Tues. Aug 22 | 1:30 – 3:00 pm | 13,000 Years of High Park – Join us to learn 13,000 years of history of High Park! From melting glaciers to modern day hikers, this walk will include some Indigenous history and uses of the land, the history of how High Park became a public park, and the more recent history of restoration, especially of the Black Oak Savannah. Join us to delve deep into the history of the biggest park inside of Toronto.

Tween Makers Club: Tuesdays at Annette Library, from 3:00 – 4:00 pm. Come join the fun and create DIY projects to bring home each week! Ages 10 and up. Drop-in, no registration required.
